3D Bat Cake and Picture/Word Tutorial

Chocolate cake with 3 layers of chocolate buttercream filling, frosted with black chocolate buttercream, and fondant accents. I took this cake to a Halloween party and it was a huge hit!

Here is the Tutorial to go along with the pictures!

1.Bake your cake using the Wilton Wonder Mold. Let cool and fill (I did three layers of filling, but do how you want). Here is the link to buy the one on Wilton.com.http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2105-565
2. This cake I decided to do in buttercream (you can cover it in fondant, too). I frosted it in black chocolate buttercream, let it set for about 10-15 minutes and then smoothed the buttercream with wax paper.
3.Next I found a template on Google for the bat wings. I sized it how I wanted it, about 4 inches depending on how big you want your wings to be, and then printed it out. I then took my template and cut out 4 wings using my black fondant. The fondant should be a little thicker than 1/8 of an inch.
4.Shows the 4 wings that I cut out. Two wings are going the same direction and the other two are going the opposite direction (right wing, left wing).
5.Next I use a popsicle or cookie stick (found at Michaels), place that in the middle of the wing, and then add some water around the stick, and then press the two together.
6. I always make sure that I push one side of the wing down around the stick and the other side is flat and you can't see the stick at all. The side that you can see the stick will be the back of the wing and the flat side of the wing (where you can't see the stick) will be on the front of the cake. I hope that makes sense.
7.Now I do both wings and let them dry some on a craft block (green one or Styrofoam works, too) covered in wax paper.
8.Next make the ears. I took a heart cutter and cut 4 hearts out. I didn't cut out the whole heart because I only need the pointy part of the heart.
9.Then I cut some of the bottom of the heart off so it looks like the picture in #9.
10.Then I added some more water and the cookie/popsicle stick and pressed the two pieces together.
11.I then put a slight line in the middle of the ear with a small knife. I molded the ears so they looked curved inward and I also stretched the bottom edges of the ears some. I did this by hand using my fingers.
12.Now I put the ears on the craft block to dry also. So, you should have 2 wings and 2 ears drying on the craft block.
13.Next the eyes. Roll some white fondant balls. I like my eyes to be big, make them however you want. I took my #10 Wilton tip and used the bottom circle and cut out 2 yellow circles. I then rolled 2 small black balls (same size).
14.Next add the yellow and black circles to the white eyeball. Then I took my red food writer (Wilton fine tip) and made zig zags around the eyeballs.
15.I took toothpicks and poked them into the eyeball and then put them in the cake (about 1/3 of the way into the eyeball). This is because the eyeball is so heavy, it could fall right off the buttercream cake (gravity is not your friend in this case).
16.Next cut 2 triangles using a star cutter. (white fondant)
17.Now cut out a red circle and cut some of it off, but not quite in half.
18.Roll some black fondant. You will need a long piece for the mouth. (thin piece, but not as thin as a spaghetti-see picture)
19.Now roll 2 more smaller pieces of black fondant-same thickness as the larger one and they both need to be the same length.
20.Now add the ears, and eyes. Use a little bit of water to add the mouth, teeth, and tongue. I added a buttercream dot border along the edge of the cake. You can do that or whatever border you want. Next add the wings.
21 & 22. Now cut out 4 white circles, 4 yellow circles, and 4 orange circles with a circle cutter. Add 4 orange ones in the middle, 4 white ones on the left, and 4 yellow ones on the right. I wrote Trick or Treat in black buttercream on the circles.
23. Finished product!
